Yesterday (Monday), there was a meeting in the house of Rabbi Ch. L. Rottenberg of Koson/Forshay, where there were also present Rabbi Israel Hager of Viznitz and Rabbi Chaim Shia Halberstam of Satmar/Monsey, about supporting the campaign of Sherri Eisenpress for Judge of Family Court in Monsey. It seems that these rabbis think that they are G-D, that they can know that Ms. Eisenpress repented from her "lesbianese" and she is worthy of their unholy endorsement.
Rabbi Chaim Flohr seems to think that she should not be voted for and he refused to sign the endorsement, he is of the opinion that her letter of repentance has no value, and it is not allowed to vote for her.
Sparaco and the Dems:
Democrat party chief Kristen Stavisky says Republican power broker and Legislative Majority Leader Frank Sparaco is making alliances with politicians who will run on both Democrat and Republican lines, and who ultimately have promised him that they will caucus with the Republicans should they win. Stavisky told the Rockland County Times that, "When people go to vote and see two Democratic candidates, they think they are choosing between two real Democrats. What's going on is wrong." She also said she's had it with the trickery that minor parties play, and she believes New York should join 39 other states and outlaw cross endorsements.
To highlight the farce of minor party politics in New York, conservative Republican Sparaco is likely to be the nominee on Election Day of the left-wing Working Families Party. He is not the first candidate to stack a minor party with his own supporters and then take it over; it's an old game. Stavisky said she believes the Republican cross-over hijinx may be coming through the person of Joseph Meyers and others with a "Preserve Ramapo agenda.
One of Sparaco's Democrats, Ricky Sanchez of Haverstraw, said he woke up this week to find his campaign van spray painted and his tires slashed. He believes the attack was politically motivated and he's offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to knowledge of who perpetrated the crime. If you have information you can call Sanchez at 429-9240. His primary opponent, incumbent Jay Hood Jr., donated $400 to St. Peter's school in Sanchez's name, as a means of rebuking the violence.
Orthodox Jews Financing Gay Candidate:
While the Christian right wing can be fairly zealous in their opposition to gay rights, the most hostile to gay political causes arguably are the Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish groups. Hence the surprise of many in Rockland to find out that open lesbian Sherri Eisenpress is running as a Democratic candidate for Family Court and receiving an unprecedented influx of cash from religious Jews in Monsey and Brooklyn.
It is not common for the Family Court position to receive the donations Eisenpress has, well over $100,000 at last count. Further, Rockland insiders are annoyed that Eisenpress is running for Family Court when she has been largely unknown in Rockland County. Though she's lived in Upper Nyack and Valley Cottage, Eisenpress has done most of her work in New York City and has not made the customary connections in the local political and legal community, insiders complained to the Rockland County Times. Apparently, Eisenpress does have connections in the Orthodox and/or Hasidic community, and as we all know, in Rockland that can be enough to get you elected.
Also running for Family Court are Karen Riley on the Democrat line and Ed Kallen. Riley had her own minor controversy, due to Ryan Karben helping with the design and distribution of her political mailings. Karben's limited official role in the campaign morphed into a big rumor about his supposed influence over her. Riley said she and her husband are in complete control of her campaign, and jested repeatedly that she regrets not having enough campaign money to "throw a free concert" as Sherri Eisenpress recently did in Spring Valley.
Ed Kallen has been a clerk to the Family Court and the State Supreme Court. On the Republican line is Paul Chiaramonte, who is running a primary against Eisenpress on the Independence line.
