Donald Fitzpatrick, now deceased, is acused of abuse over 24-year span

Twenty-one men in three states say Donald Fitzpatrick, who died at 76 in 2005, sexually abused them.

Nine more men, including two former Orioles batboys, have accused now-deceased Red Sox clubhouse manager Donald Fitzpatrick of sexually abuse them, attorney Mitchell Garabedian said at a news conference in Boston on Monday.
Twenty-one men in three states now say Fitzpatrick, who died at 76 in 2005, sexually abused them.
“I went through a whole lot of emotional shutdown because of this situation,” said Ronald Shelton, who claims that Fitzpatrick molested him twice during the 1990 Major League Baseball season, when he was a 17-year-old Baltimore Orioles bat boy. “I did not deserve this. Someone knew the conduct of this individual but allowed him to be around young boys.”
Garabedian represents two former Red Sox employees who accused Fitzpatrick of sexual abuse in December, as well as the nine men who came forward on Monday. The abuse occurred between 1967 and 1991, when his clients were 12 to 17 years old, Garabedian said.
The statute of limitations has expired on civil litigation, and Fitzpatrick is dead. But Garabedian has asked the Red Sox and the Orioles to provide $5 million each to their former employees.
He also wants the teams to release any documents related to abuse charges and confidential settlements, as well as employment records that could indicate if Fitzpatrick's superiors knew about the abuse.
“It's time for the Red Sox and Orioles to be held accountable," Garabedian said. "It's time to step up to the plate and resolve this matter so the victims of Donald Fitzpatrick can heal.”
Garabedian said he has learned that Red Sox officials transferred Fitzpatrick from the clubhouse to the ticket office to the parking lot before moving him back again to the clubhouse, “shipped from place to place, just like a priest.”
In 2003, the Red Sox settled a $3.15 million lawsuit with seven Florida men who alleged Fitzpatrick molested them during spring training beginning in the early 1970s, and Fitzpatrick pleaded guilty in 2002 in Florida to four counts of attempted sexual battery related to the case.
In 1991, the Sox paid $100,000 to a former clubhouse attendant after he displayed a sign at a televised game against the Angels in Anaheim that said, “Donald Fitzpatrick sexually assaulted me.”
Fitzpatrick remained with the team for about two weeks after the Anaheim incident. Sox officials said then that Fitzpatrick had elected to take an indefinite leave of absence. He never returned.
The Red Sox released a statement on Monday that said Fitzpatrick's action were “abhorrent.” Spokesmen for the Orioles and MLB declined comment.
Garabedian obtained a $10 million settlement for 86 people who say they were sexually abused by John Geoghan, a now-dead Catholic priest. Garabedian also helped negotiate an $85 million settlement with the Archdiocese of Boston for hundreds of people who say they were abused by priests.
Garabedian represents Jimmy Carlino, a former New Yorker who is suing ex-Christ the King High School basketball coach Bob Oliva in Queens state court. Oliva admitted sexually abusing Carlino in a Boston courtroom last year. Garabedian also represents a man who claimed he was abused by Riverside Church basketball program founder Ernest Lorch.
Shelton said he was working as a bat boy at Memorial Stadium in 1990 when the Red Sox came to Baltimore for a series. He said Fitzpatrick followed him into the visitors equipment room, blocked Shelton from leaving, and then assaulted him.
Fitzpatrick again assaulted Shelton, now a 38-year-old medical records assistant at Johns Hopkins, when the Sox returned to Boston later that season, Shelton said. "I quit because I couldn't take it anymore," Shelton told the Daily News. "I didn't want to see that monster again."
