Updated Post From LoHud About New Square Purim Arson

12:06 PM, Mar. 9, 2012
Written by Steve Lieberman
NEW SQUARE — A village dissident once set on fire for bucking rabbinical orders said his car was torched Thursday night by a drunken Purim reveler who was angry when he was denied more booze, according to Ramapo police.
Based on those circumstances, Aron Rottenberg doesn’t believe the arson fire to his car at 10:40 p.m. resulted from his previous problems with the New Square theocracy, police said.
“We’re looking to talk to that young man,” Ramapo Police Chief Peter Brower said.
Brower said Rottenberg told investigators that he “tried to counsel the young fellow against the dangers of drinking.”
“That led to some words along the line of ‘Don’t Tell me what to do’ and he left,” Brower said. “The next thing you know the car is ignited. Mr. Rottenberg stated there is no nexus between the incident last year and the incident last night.”
Rottenberg suffered third-degree burns across 50 percent of his body at about 4 a.m. May 22 when he confronted a follower of the grand rebbe. Shaul Spitzer, 18, ignited a homemade incediary device when confronted by Rottenberg after tossing a similar one onto the family’s back porch.
The night of the confrontation coincided with the Lag BaOmer festival, when religious Jews have bonfires marking the anniversary of the death of a leading rabbi and a revolt against the Roman Empire. A community group circulated a letter in August claiming Spitzer just wanted to make mischief that morning.
On Thursday night, hundreds of people celebrating the Jewish freedom festival of Purim roamed village streets, congregating on Jefferson Avenue near the community’s synagogue at 10:40 p.m when fire melted the rear bumper area of Rottenberg’s 2003 Mazda.
The arson fire started with someone lighting either paper or cardboard under the trunk near the gas tank, Ramapo Capt. Brad Weidel said this morning. He said the criminal charge is third-degree arson if someone is caught.
When Hillcrest volunteer firefighters arrived on Jefferson Avenue, New Square Emergency Services volunteers had extinguisher most of the flames melting the plastic body of the car, Fire Chief Lloyd Hovelmann said today.
He said the firefighters had trouble squeezing a truck down Jefferson Avenue with cars parked on both sides of the street and people standing around. He said New Square Emergency Services helped with crowd control and had prepped the fire department about potential crowded streets because of Purim.
“I would say 300 to 400 people in the crowd,” Hovelmann said. “It was a little tight and challenging to get to. The crowd was so big I couldn’t physically get to the scene myself and we only got one truck through. The fire was contained to one car.”
Hovelmann said the concern was the fire could have spread to other cars and potentially to the row of houses.
“The fire is very suspicious,” he said.
No injuries were reported.
The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation fire unit is investigating with Ramapo police detectives, who went to the scene on Thursday night.
This morning, no one answered the doors at Rottenberg’s house or at the Jefferson Avenue home where he had been staying. Residents walking briskly to synagogue this morning either were unaware of the fire or declined comment.
Weidel said detectives are looking to interview witnesses and any suspects who started the fire.
The attack follows what many believed was the conclusion of a difficult ordeal for the Rottenberg family.
Rottenberg led a contingent of men who prayed at the Friedwald House close to a mile away on New Hempstead Road, defying the Grand Rebbe David Twersky edict that his followers pray on the Sabbath at the community’s only synagogue on Truman Avenue.
Rottenberg’s defiance led to protests over several months in late 2010 into 2011 outside his house, with his car and house windows and other property damaged in separate vandalism. Other people’s homes and property was vandalized, with at least one family was forced to move out of New Square.
On May 22, the animosity almost became deadly when Rottenberg’s home was attacked at 4 a.m. by Shaul Spitzer, who worked as a butler for the Skver Hasidic grand rebbe and lived in his home on Jefferson Avenue.
Spitzer pleaded guilty to first-degree assault, a felony, on Feb. 7. He faces up to 10 years in state prison when sentenced April 17 by state Supreme Court Justice William A. Kelly.
Rottenberg agreed to the plea and potential sentence.
Spitzer’s plea came as part of an agreement that ended Rottenberg’s civil lawsuit. Another element of the agreement included Rottenberg’s receiving about $2 million in compensation from supporters of Spitzer and Twersky.
The grand rebbe and New Square rabbinical court issued an order that the Rottenberg family was to be left alone and allowed to sell their home without interference, if that was their decision.
